The most recent take action is the Equality Act 2010. Previous to this, equality legal guidelines in this country was somewhat fragmented. The objective of the new act was to harmonize and improve all previous equality guidelines (eg The Equal Pay Act 70, Sex Discrimination Act 1975, Race Relationships Act 1976, Disability Discrimination Act 1995). It desired to promote equality, by making clear the definitions of direct and indirect discrimination, victimization and nuisance. It recognized nine sets of people to be protected by discrimination, referred to as вЂprotected characteristics'. These are:
вЂў Disability (both physical and mental)
вЂў Gender reassignment
вЂў Matrimony and civil partnership
вЂў Pregnancy and expectant mothers (pregnant women, women on maternity leave, and breastfeeding women) вЂў Race (ofcourse not just shade, but likewise nationality, ethnic or nationwide origin) вЂў Religion and belief (including those with not enough belief ie Atheists) вЂў Sex
