Gerald Durrell was born in Jamshedpur, India on seventh January 1925, and grew up to be a famous naturalist, pet collector and conservationist. Above his life span he published over thirty seven books, went on dozens of animal-collecting trips and hosted numerous television shows including The Amateur Naturalist and Themselves and Other Family pets. As fate would have it, the initially word this individual spoke was " zoo", and requiring on daily visits towards the nearest menagerie. This was to be the beginning associated with an extraordinary journey for the young Gerald. His best achievement was the founding of the Jersey Tierpark in 1959 like a center for the conservation of endangered species, and the creation with the Jersey Wildlife Conservation Trust (now the Durrell Creatures Conservation Trust) in 1963. Durrell went the Zoo from its base until his death; his wife Lee is still Honorary Director of the Trust. The untimely fatality of his father found the remainder of his relatives reluctantly relocating to a somewhat less welcoming climate and settling, although temporarily, in England. Tiring of the British climate, the family members soon built the proceed to the wonderful Greek tropical isle of Corfu, where Gerald explored his passion intended for the animal empire with his moving tutor, Dr Theodore Stephanides. Aged twenty one, a small inheritance allowed Gerald to begin the life he had dreamed of - a mix of travelling, adventure and zoology. Along with being abundant in subject matter to get his blossoming writing career, this period was to provide Gerald's most startling revelation – that kinds everywhere had been on the fall. He solved to create " a new sort of zoo”. His vision is that zoos may well be a sanctuary, and work to realise a " water tank for endangered species” was somewhat controversial in its period, and two years of annoying searches for an area in England used.
